Reflections on 2014 at Oakwood Fisheries

With Winter on the way its time to reflect on another year passing at Oakwood Fisheries.

The year kicked off at the end of March the fishing was really good early season, a long lost zip linear know as the “long one” returned to the bank after a 4 year absence at a new high weight of 36lbs a very welcome site for me as I first caught this fish myself some 15 years before and its always nice to see an old face especially one as pretty as this.

The lake then produced 40’s every week for a month with a brace for one lucky angler. Also a couple of the high thirties from last season pushed past the 40lb mark.

We then had a revisit from Josh a junior angler that has visited in the past had really increased his fishing know how and banked 3 x 30’s up to 39lb 10oz and 8 x 20’s.

The fish spawned really late this year they finally got it over during the back end of June.

It was also nice to see returning faces who have become friends and new faces alike.

I was personally dying to see the big grass carp come out this year but the monster was not banked the fish is somewhere in the mid 50lb bracket and is seen regular on the surface eating weed in the shallows.

The very sought after black common made one visit to the bank early season and the perfect linear made a few appearances this year.

The surface record also got broken late season with a 46lb 6oz mirror caught on bread and one angler hooked 9 carp in 10 hours, if he would have banked all of them he would have beat my own record of 8 fish in 8 hours unlucky Ciaron!

Looking ahead to the rest of the year and 2015, there will be another stocking taking place during December where I will hand pick carp for the lake to fit in with the current stock when a local fish farmer nets his lake.

A video of the stocking will be posted as soon as they arrive. We will also be adding a few more grass carp as well as removing some of the silver fish.

There will also be some work to the lake going on with a bank of bull rushes being introduced into swim 2.

A big thank you to everybody that visited this year roll on 2015.
